Q. How often should I change or clean my air filters?
Filters should generally be replaced every month the system is running. Replace filters with the same kind and size as the original filter. If your filter is not disposable, follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning. As a rule of thumb, electronic air cleaners should be washed every 4-6 weeks and media air cleaners replaced once or twice a year.

Q. There is an arrow on my furnace filter but I'm not sure which direction it should face?
The arrow should point in the same direction as the airflow. In most cases, it will point towards the furnace and should fit between the return air part of the system and the furnace. The filter screens out the dust and other impurities before the air is warmed (or cooled) and then distributed through the duct system.

Q. Should I cover my outdoor unit in the winter?
Covering the unit is not necessary. Air conditioners are manufactured to withstand all possible climate changes. In fact, rain helps keep your unit clean. As an extra safety precaution you may want to place a piece of wood on top of the unit to protect the fan blade from damage. Wrapping the entire unit in plastic or any other cover that prevents airflow traps moisture inside and can accelerate corrosion. Of course, because heat pumps run all year long, they should never be covered. Manufacturers generally agree that plants should not be closer than 18 inches. Air conditioners need to take in and exhaust air to operate.

Q. My thermostat has two fan settings "auto" and "on" what does this mean?
The "auto" setting is typically used and means that the fan will only operate on a call for heating or cooling. The "on" setting means the fan will run continuously regardless of a call for heating or cooling. If you have an air cleaner (media or electronic) the "on" setting will give you constant filtration of your air. Remember, central air cleaning devices only work when the furnace is circulating air. If you wish to get the most from your air cleaner, you should keep the setting to "on". Another advantage of constant air circulation is, the air movement will bring a more even temperature throughout your home.

Q: What is the proper humidity setting for my humidifier?
Every home is different, but we recommend setting the dial at 35% - 45%. When the weather becomes extremely cold you may notice excess condensation on your windows. At this point you should lower your setting a bit to protect your windows.
